Senior A&D Reservoir Engineer

Summary

The Senior A&D Engineer is a technical deal-lead, taking acquisition opportunities from first-pass screen all the way through bid recommendation and closing, with their underwriting driving decisions in front of Elk Range's board. This is a seat with real authority, setting the valuation view, defending it under scrutiny, and seeing it through to a signed deal. This work happens at scale and speed. Elk Range has deployed over $1.2 billion in capital since 2020 and is actively investing out of its third NGP-backed fund, meaning a steady, high-volume pipeline of live deals to lead, not a handful of opportunities a year to compete over.

This role reports directly to the EVP of Engineering & COO and works day-to-day alongside the Director of Subsurface and A&D Engineering Manager, giving the Senior A&D Engineer direct visibility into how deal strategy and underwriting standards are set at the top of the company, and a clear line of sight to more senior technical and leadership roles as Elk Range's platform continues to grow.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Own acquisition underwriting across PDP, WIP, and undeveloped inventory, and defend the resulting valuation to the board

    • Build production forecasts, type curves, and development timing models grounded in observed operator behavior rather than generic schedules

    • Own the full cash flow build: price decks, differentials, post-production deductions, severance and ad valorem treatment

    • Build operator development outlooks from permits, rig cadence, completion design trends, and offset performance

  • Support LOI and PSA negotiation with allocated value schedules, effective date adjustments, and defect thresholds

  • Support the reserves function alongside the reserves team after closing on a transaction

  • Provide technical support to our banking and financing partners as needed, including collateral reporting and diligence responses

  • Contribute to how Elk Range as a company underwrites in the form of type curve libraries, inventory frameworks, and screening logic

  • Independent judgment - You can form and defend a view on a package, and incorporate new findings as the analysis matures

  • Self-starting - Able to be self-directed in your learning and "connect the dots" across engineering, land, and accounting data.

Hard Skills

  • 5-10+ years' experience in reservoir engineering, with at least 2 years underwriting acquisitions across minerals and royalties, non-operated working interest, or operated A&D

  • Bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering or a related engineering, geoscience, or quantitative field

  • Technical proficiency in Combocurve/Aries, Spotfire, QGIS

  • Working knowledge of major unconventional shale play geology, spacing, and operator behavior

  • Working knowledge of land and title concepts: NRA vs. NMA, NRI calculations, and mineral and decimal interests

  • Prior minerals or royalty experience, and exposure to structured finance, reserve-based lending, or securitization diligence, are a plus

Travel Requirements

Potential 5%–10% domestic and international travel required for meetings, trainings, and conferences. International travel could involve an annual on-site training session with our offshore team in India.
